# Scan to email test

> Send a scan from a printer or copier to a Faxbeep test address and check how it arrived.

Send a scan from a printer or copier to one of the test email addresses, and Faxbeep displays it on [faxbeep.com](https://faxbeep.com). The test shows whether your machine can send email and how the scan looks when it arrives. It doesn't test a phone line.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Each test is public for 30 days. Anyone can open it on faxbeep.com. Use a test page with no personal or confidential information. To remove a test early, see [Remove a fax](https://faxbeep.mintlify.site/privacy/remove-a-fax.md).

## Test addresses

| Country | Dial locally | International | Test email address |
| - | - | - | - |
| US | 1 (972) 532-9272 | +19725329272 | [19725329272@faxbeep.com](mailto:19725329272@faxbeep.com) |
| UK | (020) 3808-9463 | +442038089463 | [442038089463@faxbeep.com](mailto:442038089463@faxbeep.com) |
| Australia | (02) 6103-9109 | +61261039109 | [61261039109@faxbeep.com](mailto:61261039109@faxbeep.com) |

Each fax number is also a test email address. Use the digits of the international number, without the `+`, followed by `@faxbeep.com`.

Use an address from the "Test email address" column. Email to an address that doesn't match a test number isn't treated as a test: it doesn't appear on faxbeep.com, and you don't get a refusal message.

## How to send a scan

**1. Enter a test address**

Enter one of the test email addresses on your machine.

**2. Scan and send**

Scan a page and send it to that address as a single PDF, TIFF, or JPEG attachment.

**3. Find your result**

Open [faxbeep.com](https://faxbeep.com). Your scan usually appears at the top of the results within a minute. It's titled "Email from" followed by your masked sender address, and its page says "Received by email".

**4. Check the result**

Open your scan. Check that the pages are upright and readable, and that the page count is right. See [The fax page](https://faxbeep.mintlify.site/results/fax-page.md).

## What you can send

| Item | Rule |
| - | - |
| File types | PDF, TIFF, and JPEG |
| Attachments per email | One is used. See [Which attachment is used](#which-attachment-is-used). |
| Pages | Up to 20 per attachment |
| Email size | 7 MB for the whole email, so the attachment can be about 5 MB |
| Image resolution | Refused if the pixel count is very high, even when the file is small. Scan at a lower resolution. |
| Password-protected PDF | Not accepted. Remove the password before you send. |
| Color | Accepted and displayed in color. Email only |
| Hourly limit | 60 emails per hour from one sender address |

All of Faxbeep's limits are on the [Limits](https://faxbeep.mintlify.site/reference/limits.md) page.

### Which attachment is used

Faxbeep identifies each file's type from its content, not its name. If an email has more than one usable file, Faxbeep picks one: a PDF or TIFF before a JPEG, and otherwise the first in the email. A real attachment takes priority over an image embedded in the message body, so a logo in your email signature won't replace your scan.

If your machine saves each page as a separate JPEG, only the first page appears. Set the scan file format to PDF or TIFF so all the pages go in one file.

### Hourly limit

The limit applies to the sender address, the address in the email's "From" field. Every email counts, including one that Faxbeep then refuses because of its attachment. Two kinds of refused email don't count: one refused because the whole email is too large, and one refused because you're already over the limit. When you reach the limit, wait an hour.

Some machines send every scan from one shared address. All the machines that use that address then share one limit.

## What the result shows

* Faxbeep displays only a masked version of your sender address. It never displays the subject or the message body. See [How sender details are displayed](https://faxbeep.mintlify.site/results/sender.md).
* Faxbeep converts each attachment to a PDF that contains only images of your pages. You can't select text in the PDF, and file metadata, such as a device serial number, is removed.
* If the same email arrives twice, it creates two results.
* If Faxbeep accepts the email but can't process the attachment, the fax page says "This fax could not be processed. Please try sending again."

## Refusals and send errors

Faxbeep doesn't send a reply email. If it can't accept your scan, it rejects the email during delivery with a short message. Your outgoing mail server reports that message, and many machines display or print it. For each message and what to do about it, see [Email refusal messages](https://faxbeep.mintlify.site/troubleshooting/email-refusals.md).

If your machine shows a send error that isn't one of those messages, check its outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings first. If nothing appears on faxbeep.com and you get no message, see [My fax does not appear](https://faxbeep.mintlify.site/troubleshooting/fax-does-not-appear.md).
